About the Museum

Let the Museum introduce itself

About Museum of Tarot

Museum of Tarot (or Bảo Tàng Tarot in Vietnamese), founded in 2016 (will officially open in 2017), is located in Can Tho City, in the south of Vietnam. The museum has three themes: Lithotherapy, Cartomancy and Demonology.

It is combined from six main collections related to Tarology:

Fortune Telling Cards (Tarot and Oracles decks), Historical Books and Documents on Cartomancy, Art of Cardmaking and Decoration of Fortune Telling Cards; Amulets and Talismans and Magical Tools; Lithotherapy Crystals and Charmestones; Demonological and Sacred Books and Haunted Objects.

The museum is established in an ancient noble hotel, called “the citron house”, under the Vietnamese renaissance style. This house is sacrificed for the museum by an old couple of lawyer, Anh Ngo and Duong Ho in 2015.

AA007:Embracing the Unknown: The Essence of 'The Fool' in Tarot

The Fool – Tarot Of Marseilles

AA007

The Journey of The Fool: Discovering “The Fool” in the Tarot of Marseilles

In the mystical world of Tarot, “The Fool” card always holds a special place. Lacking a specific numerical order, “The Fool” represents both the beginning and the infinite, the starting point and the conclusion of a spiritual journey. The Tarot of Marseilles, one of the oldest and most popular decks, depicts “The Fool” as a vibrant and expressive image.

“The Fool” symbolizes boundless freedom and unforeseeable possibilities. This character is often portrayed as a young man striding forward with strength and confidence, blissfully unaware of the potential dangers that lie ahead. His red shoes, a striking detail in the imagery, represent the power and passion to move forward despite the risks.

On “The Fool’s” shoulder is a leather pouch, containing all that he owns - his experiences, knowledge, and even his naivety. This pouch is not just an accessory but also a symbol of the quest for knowledge and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

The white dog accompanying “The Fool” is not just a companion but also a symbol of intuition and instinct. It reminds us that while we may act freely and uninhibitedly, we must always remain vigilant and listen to our inner voice.

“The Fool” in the Tarot of Marseilles is not just a card but a reminder of the continuous exploration and the courage to face the unknown. It invites us to step out of our comfort zones, to seek, to learn, and to experience life to the fullest.

BB010: The Art of Hoi Polloi Tarot: Boundless Creativity

The Hoi Polloi

BB010

The Hoi Polloi Tarot Deck: A Colorful Creation from 1972

In the world of Tarot, there are decks renowned for their unique designs and profound meanings, and the Hoi Polloi Tarot deck is a prime example. Born in 1972 in New York, this deck is known as a “clone” version of the famous Rider-Waite Tarot deck, yet it features its own distinctive traits.

The Hoi Polloi deck is designed with vibrant colors and a psychedelic style, creating a fresh and appealing look that captivates viewers. While it retains the structural imagery of the original deck, it has removed some of the additional details and backgrounds, making the cards simpler and easier to interpret.

A special feature of the Hoi Polloi deck is the reversal of the positions of the Strength and Justice cards, following the tradition of the Marseille Tarot rather than Rider-Waite. This not only highlights the differences between the two Tarot traditions but also reflects the diversity in approaches and understandings of Tarot.

The Hoi Polloi deck is not just an entertainment tool; it is also a means for self-discovery and future prediction. With its diversity in skin tones among the images, the deck also represents a cultural advancement compared to the Rider-Waite deck.

More than 35 years since its release, the Hoi Polloi Tarot remains an icon of creativity and artistic freedom in the Tarot world. It is not only a part of Tarot history but also an inspiration for Tarot enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.

AA006:Unveiling the Enigma: The Jean Dodal Tarot Deck and Its Cross-Cultural Journey

Tarot Jean Dodal

AA006

The Mystery and Legacy of the Jean Dodal Tarot Deck

The Jean Dodal Tarot deck, an 18th-century artistic masterpiece, is one of the oldest classic Tarot de Marseille decks recorded in history. Produced in Lyon, France, this deck is not only a divinatory tool but also a rich cultural heritage, containing valuable historical mysteries.

One of the most intriguing mysteries related to this deck is the change in the spelling of Jean Dodal’s name. On the 2 of Cups card, the name is written as “Jean Dodal,” while on the 2 of Coins, it is “Faict a Lyon par Jean Dodali.” This indicates that the deck was produced in Lyon by “Jean Dodali” and also suggests that Dodal may have changed his name to better suit exportation to Italy.

The abbreviations PLN and FPE on the 2 of Cups card also support this hypothesis, with PLN possibly standing for “Pour Le Négoce” (For Business) and FPE meaning “fait pour l’etranger” (made for export). This reflects a smart strategy in expanding the market and distributing Dodal’s products beyond the French borders.

The Jean Dodal Tarot deck is not just an artwork but also a window into the past, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the era. With its reproduction and restoration, this deck continues to inspire and support Tarot enthusiasts around the world.
