About the Museum

Let the Museum introduce itself

About Museum of Tarot

Museum of Tarot (or Bảo Tàng Tarot in Vietnamese), founded in 2016 (will officially open in 2017), is located in Can Tho City, in the south of Vietnam. The museum has three themes: Lithotherapy, Cartomancy and Demonology.

It is combined from six main collections related to Tarology:

Fortune Telling Cards (Tarot and Oracles decks), Historical Books and Documents on Cartomancy, Art of Cardmaking and Decoration of Fortune Telling Cards; Amulets and Talismans and Magical Tools; Lithotherapy Crystals and Charmestones; Demonological and Sacred Books and Haunted Objects.

The museum is established in an ancient noble hotel, called “the citron house”, under the Vietnamese renaissance style. This house is sacrificed for the museum by an old couple of lawyer, Anh Ngo and Duong Ho in 2015.

AA001: Exploring the Unique Expression of Tarot de Marseille: A Comparative Analysis

Marseille Vintage Tarot

AA001

The article “The Superiority of the Tarot de Marseille” is translated and annotated based on the essay “The Excellence of the Marseilles Tarot” by Enrique Enriquez, a renowned Tarot de Marseille researcher. He is also the author of the book and documentary of the same name, “Tarologa”.
  1. Distinguishing Between Tarot de Marseille and Fantasy Decks:
    • Enriquez asserts the importance of clearly distinguishing between the Tarot de Marseille (TdM) and “fantasy decks”. Fantasy decks are tarot sets that are the product of an author’s imagination. TdM is not about being “real” or “unreal”, but it is entirely different in its logic of expression compared to fantasy decks.
    • TdM uses an optical language of expression to create fresh and different implications each time one looks at the cards. This narrows the symbolic capacity of the images, reducing the Symbolic Level of the card.
  2. Tirage en Croix (Cross Spread of the Tarot de Marseille):
    • Tirage en Croix is one of the popular methods of drawing cards in Tarot. It consists of 5 cards placed in the shape of an “X”:
      • Card 1: The Present: Represents the current situation of the querent and how they perceive the circumstances.
      • Card 2: The Challenge: Represents the problem or challenge the querent is facing. Even if a “positive” card is in this position, it is still a challenge.
      • Card 3: The Past: Represents events that have led to the current situation.
      • Card 4: The Future: Represents what may happen in the coming weeks or months.
      • Card 5: The Objective: Represents the goal or the best possible outcome the querent wishes to achieve.

The Game To Tom: The Card Game Legend and Cultural Heritage of Vietnam

THE GAME TO TOM

A004

Tổ tôm, also known as Tụ tam bài, is a traditional Vietnamese card game, typically played by men during festivals. This game originates from the Chinese game of Khanhoo and utilizes a deck of Chinese currency cards, totaling 120 cards. Each card features images and Chinese characters at the top and bottom to indicate its rank and suit.

In the past, under French colonial rule, the Tổ tôm deck was redesigned by the French company A.Camoin & Cie, inspired by traditional Japanese Edo period costumes. This redesign added a distinctive cultural element to the Tổ tôm deck, making it not just a form of entertainment but also a part of Vietnam’s cultural heritage.

The Tổ tôm deck consists of three suits: Văn (), Sách (), and Vạn (), each divided into ten ranks with the highest cards being Nửa Văn, Sợi Không, and Ông Lão respectively. Players draw and discard cards to form a hand of twenty-one cards. Combinations include sets of three or four identical cards, a sequence of three cards of the same suit, or three cards of the same rank but each from a different suit.

Tổ tôm is more than just a game; it is a part of Vietnamese tradition and culture. It reflects the sophistication of Vietnamese entertainment and preserves and promotes cultural values through generations. The game not only brings people together during festive occasions but also offers an opportunity to impart strategic thinking and skills, showcasing the creativity and finesse in Vietnamese gameplay.

Do Xam Huong: From Classical Fortune-Telling to Vietnamese Folk Culture

The Game Do Xam Huong

A002

The game “Đổ xăm hường” is a part of Vietnamese cultural heritage, reflecting the spirit and aspirations of the scholarly class in achieving prestigious academic titles. It is not just a recreational game but also a symbol of academic effort and ambition in the Nguyen Dynasty society.

This game originated from the Nguyen Dynasty’s inner court and gradually spread to officials, nobles, and the wealthy in the capital. With the “xăm hường” card set containing academic titles from “tú tài” to “trạng nguyên”, players would draw these cards in hopes of reflecting their true life dreams - that is, to pass the exams and become scholars, officials, bearing the responsibility of serving the king, helping the country.

Each card in the “xăm hường” set is made from elephant ivory, animal bones, precious wood, or bamboo slats, and nowadays, there are also plastic cards. The cards are meticulously carved with the card name in Chinese characters, and the card size varies according to their point value.

This game is not only a form of entertainment but also a way to educate about the history and academic culture of Vietnam. It encourages studying and striving to achieve academic accomplishments, reflecting the value of knowledge and dedication to society.
