HH047: Engineer of the Esoteric: Jean-Marie Lhôte and the Legacy of Tarot Research

 SHAKESPEARE DANS LES TAROTS

HH047

Jean-Marie Lhôte was a French writer and engineer, renowned for his research on tarot and divination. He was born on September 8, 1926, and passed away on December 9, 2023. Lhôte dedicated much of his life to exploring and explaining the symbolic systems in games and tarot decks, particularly through his works “Le Tarot,” published in 1971, and “Histoire des jeux de société: géométries du désir,” published in 1994.

In his work, Lhôte delved into the history and meaning of tarot cards, as well as their connection to other belief systems such as astrology. He believed that tarot was not just a tool for divination but also a repository of knowledge on spirituality and philosophy.

Lhôte also contributed to the understanding of tarot by introducing and commenting on the work of Antoine Court de Gébelin, another prominent tarot researcher, in his book “Le Tarot,” published in 1983. Through this, he expanded knowledge about tarot and facilitated deeper research on the subject within the academic community and among tarot enthusiasts.

Furthermore, Lhôte was known for his contributions to culture and the arts, from working in theaters to managing cultural organizations. He left a profound mark in this field and is remembered as a significant influence on the development of tarot as a part of popular culture.
